Three phase switching at the Royal Society

The Royal Society is a Fellowship of the world’s most eminent scientists and is the oldest scientific academy, having been founded in 1660 and granted a Royal Charter by King Charles II. The Society has played a part in some of the most significant, and life-changing discoveries and their scientists make an outstanding contribution in many research areas. Clients of this stature demand scientific accuracy and totally reliable procedures – and that was what Burton & Smith could be trusted to provide during a recent internal move, necessitated by a substantial refurbishment of their Carlton House Terrace offices.

The key objective was to avoid disrupting the work of the Society’s staff and the chosen method was a carefully executed three phase process.
At the beginning of April, to enable building work to start on the third floor, 70 staff were temporarily moved down to the second floor, which involved reconfiguring the existing desk layout. Some weeks later the staff were moved back to the third floor, together with the original 70 second floor occupants, who in turn were moved back to their base in May to complete the cycle. All this took place out-of-hours, starting when the offices closed on Friday evening and making sure that everything was in the right place and fully connected ready for business to recommence as normal on the following Monday. Around 1000 crates were required.

Head of Facilities, Gary Smith, reported that ‘the project timetable was very tight and without your dedicated team the project would not have run as efficiently …. your team were polite and professional at all times and the team leaders showed real initiative and enthusiasm.’
